March One-ball |
Howard and Kevin |
Forty players turned out for the last one-ball of the off-season, on the
Welsh saint's day; and appropriately, five of them were named David.
This event was also a heat of the CA One-Ball Championship, with £3 for
each player going to Cancer Research UK, so a record £120 for a single
heat was raised.
For most of the morning Howard Cheyne, playing off a generous 12, and
Rutger Beijderwellen, who has been given a unique personal handicap of
-10 to match his one-ball supremacy, were unbeatable. They were then
pitched against one another and a nail-biting match resulted in Howard
winning by one point.
Howard had to survive one more challenge to lift the trophy and that
came from third-placed Chris Farthing. Howard used just four of his six
bisques to go all the way around and peg-out in a single turn. So, he
also won a bottle of bubbly for the first all-round break of the day, to
go with his trophy and his guaranteed place in the final in April.
Don Beck, Rutger and the evergreen Ted Matthews all finished with just
one loss.
Bridge is now firmly established as an afternoon activity following each
one-ball. This month we were delighted that Hazel Kittermaster could
join us after her recent illness. She and her daughter, Kitty, played
well but finished third. The winners, by a squeak, were Kevin Carter and
his Cambridge-based guest, Andrew Gregory, from Charlie Sturge and John
Hobbs.
