Surbiton Charity One-ball Heat

Kevin Carter writes: writes:

Twenty-one players braved the elements for this year's club heat of the Charity One-Ball Championship and most people completed four or five games before we had to call a halt after the persistent rain rendered the courts unplayable.

At that time the leading contenders were the married pair of Diana and Richard Stevens, both on 4/4. They agreed to play the final between themselves at a later date and meanwhile took the trophy home. Third was Jonathan Edwards, on 4/5 and all three qualify for the final on 13th May.

As is so often the case, the highlight of the tournament was lunch. This time it was provided by Sue Strong, who cooked pea and mint soup followed by a very interesting South African dish called Bobotie - a sort of spicy mince with an eggy topping.

Thanks to all participants, who contributed £150 for this year's charity, the Downs Syndrome Association.
