Sam Murray wins the Hurlingham Cup |
The Class singles at Hurlingham are the centrepiece of the Hurlingham week, and the home club were determined to repeat last year's feat of bagging all the silverware. A raiding party from Surbiton ensured this would not happen.
The singles is divided into three sections based on grade. Surbiton stalwart Don Beck disposed of local Mark Strachan in the Younger Cup, whilst a resurgent Nigel Polhill claimed the Turner Cup, defeating another Hurlingham member, Alan Chance in the final.
In the top event, Sam Murray, despite losing his first two block games, defeated Mark Ormerod +26 in the semi-final, and took on Gabrielle Higgins, recently the runner-up in the Women's World Championship, in the final. After Gabrielle failed to approach hoop 2 setting up the triple peel following a super advanced contact leave, Sam hit in. Gabrielle didn't take croquet again, Sam winning +16, and denying Gabrielle a fourth successive victory in the Hurlingham Cup.
