On 9th March the club held its March Winter One-Ball, which was also our heat of the Charity One-ball. It was postponed from the previous week, when the courts were waterlogged, and the weather could not have been more different: 19C as we finished!
We had 29 players and a large proportion played seven rounds, with handicaps ranging from Nick Parish's -1.5 to a couple of novices playing off 24. The Furse family fielded four contestants, with sons Richard and Ed performing rather better than Nick and Veronique.
The early running was made by Sam Murray (scratch), Roger Mackinnon(20) and Hugh Stephenson(11). Sam fell to Roger, then Roger fell to Ed Furse(9) and Hugh remained the only unbeaten player until he too lost to Roger. Meanwhile Nigel Polhill(-1) completed an all-round break to win a bottle of fizz and to stay in the contest, along with Mike Hampson(11), Liz Maltby(14) and Johanna Duffy(20). What a great range of handicaps!
Going into lunch the manager was left with a nightmare seven players tied on one loss. However, these were eventually resolved into two. With Roger having already beaten Hugh the former was declared the winner but both were given free places to play in the final, at Winchester of 11th May.
£5 from each player, plus some donations, resulted in our heat producing £171 for Prostate Cancer UK. Thanks to everybody.
