Winter 10+ Handicap Competition Finals Day

Chas Fellows writes:

The final ‘Winter Wednesday’ has always had a bit of a carnival atmosphere about it, but it was especially so this year, with Organiser Martin Pulsford having marshalled his band of helpers – wife Trudi, Johanna Duffy, Lorraine Helen & John Reynolds – to produce a splendid spread at a ludicrously modest cost (which included lunchtime drinks!). This was a wonderful effort, much appreciated by all who were there.

Winter 10+ results are accumulated from the beginning of December, and finals day is an all-play-all between the four leaders after the penultimate week, with final day scores added in to give a grand total. Thus, Peter Lomax with 12/15 (80.0 %) was the favourite at the start of the day, with Mike Hampson 14/18 (77.8%) and Mike Lambert 11/15 (73.3%) close behind.

Peter started with a convincing victory over Bob Prichard (the fourth finalist), but Mike L beat Mike H to set up a crunch second round game against Peter. When Mike L won this, he and Peter were neck and neck with 13/17 each, while Bob beat Mike H.

In the last round, Mike L beat Bob, while Peter lost a close game to Mike H. Thus, Mike Lambert won all three final day games (the other three winning one each) to achieve a well earned victory, with 14/18 (77.8%). Commiserations to Peter, in his first year at the Club, who having led throughout most of the winter, finished 2nd on 13/18 (72.2%). Mike Hampson was 3rd with 15/21 (71.4%) and Bob Prichard 4th with 12/21 (57.1%).

A one ball competition for the non-finalists, was won (with 5 out of 6) by Jim Wade, who joined last year and was playing one ball for the first time.

Many thanks to Martin who, once again, has run the whole of the winter competition with great efficiency; and in a difficult winter from the point of view of weather, we have again been indebted to Bob Prichard for his sage advice on likely conditions for play.
