The 'Hazel Nuts' Alternate Stroke Doubles

Kevin Carter writes:

27 Hazel Nutters enjoyed this year's Alternate Stroke Doubles tournament, sponsored by Hazel Kittermaster.

We had a good spread of handicaps from -0.5 to 24 and this included several very promising newcomers to the club. Everybody played four shortened games of handicap doubles, each with a different partner, and generally the manager tried to have a senior player and an 'apprentice' in each partnership

Among the low bisquers David 'Moonbeam', Kevin Carter, John Dawson and Nick Furse all started well, but only Nick kept going all day and took the silver tankard. At the high bisquer end Nick Cheyne predictably performed well - this players' talent always seemingly ahead of his handicap, as did a very consistent Margaret Hampson. Jim Wade only took up the game a few weeks ago but won three games in his first tournament and it will be surprising if he does not do well in the future. However, the second silver tankard went to Bill Cannon, who used to play 20 years ago and has recently retired and taken up the game again - with 4/4 the rust is receding fast.

The manager's pot of maramalade for the booby prize was keenly contested and only a tie-break resolved it in favour of Linda Sheraton-Davies, ahead of Charlie the Gardener.

It was good to see Dorothy Miller coming along for half a day and the manager's mischief was in evidence in the last round when she was partnered by Brian Rees - the two having a combined age well in excess of 160 years. And they won!
