Don Beck writes:

Eight players from the south east, including the Isle of Wight, met to contest this one-day event.

It is seen as a stepping stone for improvers looking to move on to the “opens”, providing a taste of what is expected of players in a tournament. With this in mind the format was a single block followed by a final. Some were surprised at the amount of play, 7 or 8 13pt games in a day. Play was not double banked and there were no time limits. (in opens play can be 10x13pt games double-banked and the day will usually finish by 6:30pm)

Of the four pretournament favourites, Richard Harris’s form continues to be patchy and Sam Murray narrowly lost to the two finalists.

Nick Furse (NF) with7/7 and Nick Cheyne (NC) 6/7 started the final with a mixture of sound play (NF) and some mistakes (NC) resulting in NF taking a 5-3 lead. A good hoop 9 running through to 10 gave NC the advantage and he took 10. NF won 11 and then jawsed 12 with blue. Red and black did nothing waiting for yellow to jump.

From 2 yards NC’s effort was straight but short peeling the blue. Had he made it he would have been favourite for 13 as blue, in the hoop, might not have had a shot to get in front of 13.

Result:

1st Nick Furse
2nd Nick Cheyne
3rd Sam Murray 5/7
4th = Colin 3/7, Richard 3/7
6th Guy 2/7
7th= Charlie 1/7 John1/7
(again we see that all players won at least one game.)

Handicap changes:
Richard Harris 3 to 4
Sam Murray 7 to 6.
