On 7th March the club had the last of its Winter One-Balls, and it was also the club's heat of the CA Charity One-Ball Championship. The 28 entries raised £89 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Rutger Beijdewellen (aka 'Bodger'), recently elected to represent GB in the MacRob tests this summer, was the star player. He has a special, personal one-ball handicap of -10 but still managed to win his first six games. A number of players tried to keep up: David Wedmore, David Ruscombe-King, Martin Burger, Andrew Johnson, Don Beck and club newcomer Carole McLoughlin (playing well off 18).
However, it was left to Nick Furse be the final challenger to Bodger's supremacy and he rose to the task well, playing a canny game and using his bisques to good effect to get to 3-back before Bodger had barely started. Then he pounced on one of his opponent's rare errors and finished.
Both Nick and Bodger have been invited to the final, played at Winchester on 8th May.
Alex and Jenny's warming lunch was most welcome before 14 sat down for handicap bridge in the afternoon. This time Nick, partnering Chas, fared less well; Quiller and Nigel Polhill won comfortably.
