Surbiton: John Dawson (8), Howard Cheyne (8), Kitty Kittermaster (16) & Christine Dyer (16)
Purley Bury: Audrey Sherwin (9), Nigel Wilson (11), Else Garbett (16) & Desmond Price (16)
Our day began inauspiciously with the discovery at 9.55 (10 am start!!) that our intended team was illegal since the sum of their handicaps was less than the minimum of 48 required by B League rules. Following a hasty phone call, to our rescue came … SuperKitty, who, unbelievably, was present and ready to play by around 10.08 am. Thank you Kitty. for saving us from a considerable embarrassment.
With freshly cut and marked lawns, courtesy of George, and the threatened rain holding off, the rest of the day proceeded much more smoothly. John always looked comfortable against Audrey, and despite one or two mishaps (like running Rover in the wrong direction), he ran out a +16 winner. Howard’s game against Nigel was a nail-biting affair with little in it at any time. In the end it was Howard who held his nerve to win +3. The bisqueless doubles was a protracted affair, but Kitty and Christine were always in control and won +14 on time. After lunch some friendly doubles were enjoyed by all.
Final score: Surbiton 3, Purley Bury 0.
