Rutger & Howard
Rutger & Howard

The 2009 event was held on very good lawns in bright sunshine. In contrast last year snow fell resulting in no play on the Sunday, though Tom Weston did build a superb snowman.

Back to 2009 - With some regulars distracted by the coming Worlds AC the entry was down in numbers but not in quality. The manager adopted the single block format to generate two finalists who would contest a best of 3 final (the first game being the block game contested by the two finalists.

Rutger the pre-tournament favourite and his opponent were the first to report a result. Rutger lost -well played Richard Harris. After three rounds there was no-one undefeated. It promised to be a competitive weekend. Rutger with 11/13 (his other loss was to Richard Thompson) was clear at the top as one of the finalists. The manager expected his opponent to be Howard Cheyne but he lost to John Spiers. Well, Malcolm Bigg would win and take his place in the final - wrong, he lost to Bill Arliss 7-6. Had Tom Weston won 5 players would have tied with 8/13 in second place, he finished on 7/13 with Will Gee, John Spiers, Richard Thompson.

Howard did make the final by virtue of having beaten Malcolm, Simon Carter, and Mark Hamilton in the block.

Rutger started the final a game up. In the second his shooting was inconsistent allowing Howard to build an early lead. Rutger took 9 and 10 but lost 11. Howard won 13.
In the decider Rutger continued with his improved shooting and Howard never got going. Rutger winning quickly 7-1.

Don't be surprised if in future Dick rebrands himself as Richard Strover. This may be linked to the fact that Rutger lost to the two Richards.

Final placing

1st Rutger
2nd Howard Cheyne
3rd Mark Hamilton
4th Simon Carter
5th Malcolm Bigg (had Malcolm beaten Bill Arliss
in the final round of the block he would have contested the final)
