THE FIRST NORTHERN HEMISPHERE TROPHY OF 2009?
The new year dawned with slackened permafrost around Surbiton such that the annual "frostbite" tournament was able to take place against the odds. Although the lawn surface was soft, the subsoil was unreasonably firm and the hoops consequently mullineric.
The "fangled" system of handicap one ball, as set out in appendix 6 of the new laws, was applied and, as is intended, favoured the higher bisquers. Thus Philip Hellen (18) beat Sue Thrussell (9) in the final to seize a tankard which he will not use.
The picture shows Phillip receiving the trophy from the manager, Alec Thomas.
