Twelve county sides assembles at Southwick to contest the annual event. Surrey had 5 Surbiton members; George Noble, Dick Knapp, Mary Knapp, Stephen Mulliner and Don Beck, ably assisted by Mike Town from Woking club.
Matches played between counties consist of a doubles nad 2 singles. On the first day Surrey played a "blinder" winning all their matches and leading the competition. Sunday brought a different tale with an early loss to Kent , the holders , followed by a loss to Dorset. Two rounds to play and lunch brought a few captains round the results board trying to determine the likely outcome. This was made more difficult with missing scores and matches only part completed, a problem caused by having 11 lawns for 12 teams.
IF Surrey won their 4 remaining games then it was looking like they would win irrespective of the scores from the other lawns. The team stepped up to the plate winning all three games in their next match conceding only 8 hoops points.
In the final round Surrey's remaining game was a doubles against Leicestershire. Stephen and Mike had the responsibility of guaranteeing success. It was not to be. Despite the courtside support (?) from Don and George Surrey lost a poor game, the only highlighht being Tim King running 10 from the corner behind 9 (and this on lawn 7 at southwick) .
The final placing was now dependent on Kent winning their last match 3-0 and having won their missing score match 3-0. Durham put this possibility out of the window by beating Kent!
Final placing
Surrey 1st
Kent 2nd.
